LSTM’s newly refurbished library was formerly opened to staff and students by Julia Martin, Head of Information Services, and Professor Alister Craig, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine was founded in 1898 with the first library opening two months after with a £50 budget and a collection of poems by Ronald Ross, –LSTM’s first lecturer. Today’s new library facilities are part of the wider refurbishment of LSTM’s lecture theatre and teaching rooms. Currently the library maintains specialist collections in print and online, providing access to e-journals, databases, ebooks, and research papers in an institutional repository. Its catalogue is part of WorldCat with links to the holdings of 74,000 other libraries worldwide. The newly refurbished library is a space for the whole LSTM community to use for both private study and group work.

Ms Julia Martin said: “Following completion of the new library facilities, the number of people walking through the library doors from November to December 2016 has been over 16000 compared to just over 7000 for the same time period in 2015, coupled with this we have also a steady increase in weekend usage since its refurbishment.” Julia went to thank all those involved in the refurbishment especially the library team, after which Professor Alister Craig cut the ribbon to formally open the library, and staff and students enjoyed refreshments and mince pies to celebrate.
