Dr Clare van Halsema

Honorary Senior Lecturer

Clare is a consultant physician in infectious diseases and internal medicine at the regional infectious diseases unit at North Manchester General Hospital. She has particular interests in tuberculosis, HIV, tropical infections and clinical epidemiology.

Her clinical training was in Manchester and London. She studied epidemiology (MSc, distinction) and worked as a research fellow in South Africa with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Aurum Institute, Johannesburg, undertaking research in tuberculosis and HIV in a gold-mining workforce. This led to published work and an MD (research). Previous experience includes working for Médecins Sans Frontières in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Clare was course director for the Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (2015), established and led the Diploma in UK Medical Practice 2016 - 2018 in collaboration with Royal College of Physicians of London. She previously taught on professional diplomas and short courses Diploma in Tropical Nursing, short course in Travel Health, and Distance Learning courses and now teaches DTM&H
