Professor of Neglected Tropical Diseases

This newly created post will enhance and expand LSTM’s international profile in NTD research as a priority within LSTM’s strategic plan

Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases.  Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics. At LSTM, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) promotes basic and applied research that is needed for alternative strategies to accelerate progress in attaining control and elimination targets within the portfolio of NTD activities. Large-scale funding for NTD comes from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and DFID funded activities.

The Professor of NTD will join the Department of Parasitology and contribute towards a multi-disciplinary group of high profile NTD researchers, key NTD policy makers, practitioners and specialists. The post holder in particular will expand links and activities with the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust (MLW) Clinical Research Programme, oversee ongoing implementation and research activities and lead and collaborate with academics in LSTM and MLW to develop cutting edge capacity for NTD research. As a Professor, you will design curriculum, introduce students to the latest research and maintain an international reputation in a specialist NTD subject area. In addition, you will generate grant income, liaise at a high level with external bodies and the NTD stakeholder community and maintain a broad knowledge of up to date research and scholarship. As a line manager, you will manage and mentor a team of academic and support staff whilst articulating and delivering academic vision and leadership at international platforms. The post holder will provide leadership and guidance to other colleagues and make significant contribution to the wider organisation and professional reputation of LSTM.

As a Professor, you must have a PhD or equivalent with extensive knowledge of the subject area informed by substantial current research in the field. Demonstrable knowledge of pedagogy and quality assurance coupled with effective curriculum development are also essential criteria. We are looking for someone with an outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original publications and research, as well as evidence of successfully generating prestigious external funding. Leadership and management experience, in addition to developing multidisciplinary research programmes and knowledge of strategic leadership principles in a HEI setting are critical to succeed in the post. The Professor will possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to network, negotiate and communicate effectively as well as hold strong strategic leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a wide range of staff and collaborators.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to undergo a DBS and/or other international criminal record check prior to appointment and at regular points during employment. The outcome must be satisfactory to LSTM, as the duties of this post may involve direct and/or indirect contact with vulnerable adults and/or children.
