Director’s Welcome – eTropical Issue 2

Welcome to the second issue of eTropical.

The past few months have been a busy time here at LSTM, with our income topping half a billion pounds for the first time in our history. The figure represents the total amount for LSTM’s current live grants awarded for research across the whole LSTM Group, which includes LSTM, LSTM Consulting, and IVCC. It is an incredible figure for an institution of LSTM’s size, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our researchers and the excellence of the work they undertake, all of which aims to reduce the burden of disease in endemic countries.

Elsewhere, after my announcement  of my intention to retire from the position as Director of LSTM, the process is underway to appoint my successor. It has been an honour to lead LSTM for the last 16 years, and I know that my successor will have the benefit of a talented and dedicated workforce of researches, educators and support staff who will continue to strive to alleviate the suffering of some of the world’s poorest communities.

I hope that you will enjoy this second issue of eTropical which - once again - reflects LSTM’s ongoing growth and success. We are always keen to hear from our supporters, so do pass any feedback on via alumni@lstmed.ac.uk.

Best wishes,

Professor Janet Hemingway
Director of LSTM
