Professor Giancarlo Biagini receives Hemingway Award

Professor Giancarlo Biagini has been named as the winner of the Hemingway Award by the Royal Society of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (RSTMH).

Awarded biennially by RSTMH and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the Hemingway Award recognises successful delivery or encouragement of translational science.

Professor Biagini, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation at LSTM, received this year’s prize for a 25-year career that has contributed to the understanding of mechanisms of drug action, major resistance mechanisms in malaria and the validation of novel targets for chemotherapy in both malaria and TB.

He said: “I’m very grateful to RSTMH for the Hemingway Medal. Translational research is a collective team effort, and this recognition reflects the guidance of mentors and the commitment of colleagues and students to advancing translational research for disadvantaged populations.”

The Hemingway Award was launched in 2018 to celebrate Professor Janet Hemingway’s outstanding career and achievements as she stepped down as LSTM’s Director. Previous winners include LSTM Professor Mark Taylor.

This year’s Hemingway Award was given at RSTMH’s AGM at the end of September.

Professor Steve Ward, Walter Myers Professor of Parasitology at LSTM, who nominated Professor Biagini for the award, said: “His career exemplifies what the Hemingway Award seeks to reward: transformational research, institutional leadership, and the sustained development of people and platforms that shape the future of translational research. He has turned molecular insights into candidate therapies. He has built environments where translational science can thrive, and he has empowered the next generation to have real-world impact.”
