The module will develop your understanding of key concepts in qualitative research, so you can critically appraise qualitative research and develop your competencies for conducting and commissioning qualitative research in various health contexts
The module introduces you to the theoretical and practical aspects of qualitative approaches in various global health topics. You will learn the practical aspects of qualitative research, including the influence of power in global health qualitative research, theoretical approaches, and methods (interviews, ethnography, observations etc.), ethics, transcribing, data analysis, presentation, and communication of results to diverse audiences. You will critically discuss, with examples the contextual and contested nature of research ethics and the importance of being a reflexive practitioner. Topics such as critical review, quality, rigour, and trustworthiness will be covered. The module will be taught using student-centred, problem-solving online approaches, including virtual classrooms, recorded lectures, discussion boards, videos, and peer assessments. You will also have the experience of learning from world class qualitative research conducted by LSTM academics including PhD candidates.
Summative assessment: A 3500 report - written report on an individual topic using qualitative methods to include a reflection on the experience of undertaking qualitative research

20 Academic Credits - Assessments
Assessments are optional but advise all students to take the assessments to cement their learning and to earn highly transferrable credits.
For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (Masters level credit). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
