The work of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has never been more important.
LSTM was the first institution in the world dedicated to tropical medicine research, producing many scientific firsts and leaders.
To meet the modern and evolving challenges of infectious and non-communicable diseases amidst the complexities of climate change and globalisation, LSTM beleives the solution is through research, innovation and education.
Today's Global Health Challenge:
The impact of poor health has overwhelming consequences on families, communities, and entire populations.
Denying countries access to a healthy, working population can lead to serious economic and social setbacks. A more connected world means that we are all invested in creating better health outcomes forn everyone.
As recent events have shown, pandemics do not respect geographical boundaries. A globally focussed effort is needed to combat the next major health threats to humanity.
There are brilliant minds working across the world on global health, but we need to produce the future leaders more quickly.
Our Vision: Impacting health in the Global South for the benefit of humanity, worldwide.
Research at LSTM has never just meant working in a laboratory. We work in some of the most fragile health systems and challenging environments. What we learn in the field, we apply elsewhere, making our work as relevant in Merseyside as it is in Malawi.
We will start with a focus on Africa, where our most longstanding partnerships began.
We have three core aims:
We will create a research and innovation ecosystem which will facilitate Pan-African as well as UK-African partnerships. This will focus on identifying, training and retaining scientific talent and seeding new partnerships to build scientific capacity in-country.
We will invest in research leadership, fellowships and scholarships to create a connected, collaborative global research community, working together to tackle some of humanity’s biggest global health challenges.
Philanthropy will act as a bridge to connect our network overseas with this UK-focussed investment, enabling us to capitalise on this momentum and create impact globally.
LSTM Responds: COVID-19
We have played a leading role in the UK response to COVID-19 including the development of rapid diagnostics, vaccines (as part of the Oxford vaccine phase III trial) and community interventions here and overseas. More recently LSTM led the establishment of iicon (Infection Innovation Consortium), a £130m multi-sectoral partnership to develop the UK’s globally-leading expertise in infection R&D.
