Dr Catriona Waddington

Meet Dr. Catriona Waddington, a seasoned and well-rounded health economist with over 20 years of experience in the field. With a diverse background and a wealth of knowledge, she has worked with some of the biggest names in global health, including DFID/ODA, GAVI, AusAID, and the Ethiopian Government. Her journey in the health sector also included a long-standing role at Mott MacDonald (formerly HLSP), which served as the health resource centre for DFID and allowed her to work with a variety of clients.

Dr. Waddington's journey in health economics began at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), where she was recruited by Professor Ken Newell as the school's first health economist. This opportunity allowed her to pursue her PhD while working at the school and her research focused on decision-making in the Ministry of Health in Ghana.

Her time at LSTM was an integral part of her career and personal growth. As a health economist, she was able to learn from colleagues and students and expand her knowledge and skills. One of the highlights of her time at LSTM was the opportunity to go on overseas research trips for students on the Masters in Community Health program. These trips took her to Ghana, Nepal, and Fiji, where she was able to immerse herself in different cultures and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Dr. Waddington's education at LSTM had a profound impact on her personal and professional life. She was awarded a Gatsby Foundation scholarship, which made it possible for her to relocate to Ghana and complete her PhD fieldwork. This experience left her with a life-long love for Ghana and a deep appreciation for the country.

Today, Dr. Waddington continues to make a difference in the world as a freelance health economist. Her main work is with the Fleming Fund, where she is involved in the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in low- and middle-income countries. Her dedication to her work and her passion for making a positive impact in the world are evident in everything she does.

For prospective students at LSTM, Dr. Waddington has some advice. She encourages students to work hard, talk to their colleagues, and make the most of their time at the school. Liverpool and its surroundings have a lot to offer, and students should take advantage of this opportunity to explore and learn.

Dr. Catriona Waddington is a remarkable individual who has made a lasting impact in the field of health economics. Her journey from a PhD student at LSTM to a seasoned freelance health economist has been full of challenges and rewards, and she continues to inspire those around her with her passion, dedication, and drive.
