Programme Outline
• Delivered completely online so available to professionals anywhere in the world
• Three modules studied over three 12-week semesters.
• Recommended commitment of about 15 hours per week..
• Occasional shared or synchronous learning for Q&A sessions, regular feedback from LSTM team or group-based discussions.
• Optional 2-week summer school is an opportunity to engage with policy makers, donors and programme managers to explore real life issues and solutions for maternal and newborn health in disadvantaged populations.
Programme Content
Renewed efforts are needed to improve maternal and newborn health and reduce the burden of preventable maternal and newborn deaths including stillbirths. Mothers and their newborns should expect to receive care that is respectful, timely and evidence based.
At the end of the programme, students will be grounded in evidence-based approaches to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in both low- and middle-income countries and humanitarian settings.
The interactive, online study will support your collaborative learning with peers from across the globe, enabling you to build a professional network and your potential for career development.
The three modules are:
1. Introduction to maternal and newborn health in low- and middle-income countries
2. Best practice in pre-conception, pregnancy, and intra-partum care in low- and middle-income countries
3. Best practice in the postnatal care of the mother and newborn in low- and middle-income countries.
This Postgraduate Certificate is taught and assessed at Master’s (Level 7)..
Students will be expected to dedicate about 15 hours per week to their learning during the modules. This includes time spent on lectures, engaging with online content flexibly, preparation, tutorials, formative assignments, independent study, and marked assessments.
Programme Outcomes
Successful students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate Maternal and Newborn Health by Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. They will then be able to continue their studies to a Postgraduate Diploma MNH (Year 2) and a final year of study would lead to a master’s degree MNH.
You will develop skills for studying and networking online as well as the knowledge to support interventions in maternal and newborn health throughout the health sector from community engagement to national and global policy.
