Dr. Gibby Koshy - A Journey Through Tropical Paediatrics and Public Health

Dr. Gibby Koshy is a highly distinguished medical professional with over 16 years of experience in the field of clinical research, public health, and tropical paediatrics. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) from Bangalore University, Karnataka, India and went on to complete his Masters of Tropical Paediatrics (MTropPaed, 2006) from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) with distinction. In addition to his MTropPaed, he also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Staffordshire University. In 2012, Dr. Koshy received his PhD from the University of Amsterdam, investigating Pregnancy smoking, child health and nutrition.   

His journey through tropical paediatrics and public health started with a recommendation from a friend and his interest in tropical diseases. The location of LSTM, being famous for its music, football, maritime heritage, and connection to The Beatles, made it an attractive option for Dr. Koshy. The Thomas Mark Scholarship, which he received, made it possible for him to fulfill his dream of studying tropical paediatrics and has played a crucial role in his success and achievements.

During his time at LSTM, Dr. Koshy interacted with students and teachers from different countries and became a part of an international community. He enjoyed the cultural events and international nights conducted every year and will never forget the memories he made while studying at LSTM. His education at LSTM has helped him to sharpen his academic, research, and statistical skills, and become a better person in both his personal and professional life.

Dr. Koshy has several publications to his credit and has published a book on 'Pregnancy Smoking, Child health, and Nutrition.' He has also contributed seven chapters to the 'Recent Advances in Paediatrics’ published in India. His work on pregnancy smoking, air pollution, and birth and child health outcomes has been published in peer-reviewed international journals, including Nature: International Journal of Obesity. He has been a peer reviewer for public health journals and has over 16 publications in various reputed journals.

During the past 16 years, Dr. Koshy has worked in various roles at local, national, and international levels, including clinical research assistant, academic research assistant, research associate, post-doctoral research fellow, senior public health intelligence analyst, consultant in international public health, and senior public health advisor. He has worked for different academic research groups at LSTM, including the Child and Reproductive Health Group, Clinical Sciences Group, Disease Control and Strategy Group, Infectious Disease Group, International Public Health Group, and Malaria in Pregnancy Group. Currently Dr. Koshy is Director and Senior Consultant in Tropical and Community Child health at a Community Health Centre in Kundara, India

Dr. Koshy has received numerous accolades and is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH), Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (MRCPS), Glasgow, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London. He has recently completed his Paediatric Nutrition course from Boston University and Preventive Cardiology from Medvarsity and is now a member of the European Society of Cardiology and European Association of Preventive Cardiology.
