DTMH Programme Update LSTM are making exciting changes to the DTM&H. This follows feedback from academic staff, alumni, current students and survey feedback from applicants. Full details can be found on the attached FAQ’s. In short, we are amending the programme to a blended learning approach (using both Face-to-face and online learning) as follows: PREVIOUS NEW DTM&H Week 0 Online (approx 10 hours) in your own time no change Weeks 1-8 Face to face no change - Weeks 1-8 Face to face with some online days/half days with an assessment at end of Week 8 (material covered thus far) Weeks 9-12 Online amended to - Weeks 9-12 Full Time Online followed by online assessment (using same Virtual Learning Environment as face to face) The programme remains an intensive, full-time programme with a duration of 13 weeks and will cover the same topics and learning outcomes as the full face to face format. All laboratory aspects of the programme will take place during the face to face delivery. Why are we changing the DTMH? Much of the teaching for our recent cohort was delivered online with very positive feedback from the students. Online teaching brings several advantages including greater ability for teaching from our staff based overseas in low-income or middle-income economies (LMICs). Given the ongoing uncertainty and restrictions regarding travel and face-to-face teaching, we are keen to develop a more flexible course by delivering some of the content online. Increasing the online elements of the course also gives us more flexibility to respond appropriately to COVID-19 restrictions. Numbers for May-July 2021 cohort will also be capped at a maximum of 40 students to continue social distancing. This will be reviewed for 21/22 programmes. COVID-19 update We have compiled some Frequently Asked Questions about COVID-19 for our enquirers, applicants and offer holders. Please click here for more information. We will be updating this page regularly and would advise you to review regularly for the latest information. LSTM is working with the latest advice from the UK Government and Public Health England (link is external)(PHE) on the Covid-19 outbreak. We encourage applicants and offer holders to regularly check the latest updates from the PHE website. Dr Alexandra Turnbull, studied medicine at the University of Newcastle and comes to LSTM after her F2 year. “I think it would be useful for absolutely anybody in medicine, it’s not just all about tropical medicine. There’s a lot of public health and global health involved as well as maternal and child health. It really is a wide range course. I believe coming into A&E, GP surgeries with an increased migrant populations, and with travelling overseas becoming a much bigger thing nowadays, I think anybody working in any medical, or even surgical specialty, would learn a lot from the DTM&H.” 2018 Why do Doctors choose LSTM for the DTM&H? Taken from the September 2017 applications: "The international reputation of LSTM and of the course in particular is one of the main reasons why I want to study here. I have received numerous recommendations from colleagues and have only heard positive feedback from those who have previously attended the course. I am excited about the opportunity to learn from field experts as well as people who have travelled as part of their career. As I am at the beginning of my career I hope that they will inspire me and I will come away with a long list of ‘must go’ places. Finally, to date my experience as both a medical student and working as a doctor have been based in London. I am ready to explore a new city and am excited about living and studying in Liverpool. I look forward to meeting new people on the course with whom I can share these new experiences." Programme Outline This programme is particularly useful for physicians who have trained in medicine in a developed country, but intend to practice in the tropics. It is also useful for physicians already practising in developing countries who require an update on infectious, parasitic, and other health problems, and for doctors in developed countries who need to diagnose and manage imported infections. It is recognised as fulfilling part of the requirements for the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Certificate in Travel Medicine. This is a highly intensive course, with lectures, practical exercises, tutorials, and a range of seminars that provide opportunities for small group work. Much of the practical work in the Dagnall Laboratory is hands-on, backed up with a range of demonstration materials, and facilitated by academic and technical staff. You will cover four main components: Clinical tropical medicine and child health Parasitology Vector biology Public health. Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of the major parasitic, communicable and non-communicable diseases of the tropics. Recognise the main genera of insect vectors of disease and understand their behaviour sufficiently to discuss control methods. Identify the health needs of communities and discuss ways of improving health at village and district level. Discuss the principles of epidemiology and control as applied to a range of diseases highly prevalent in the tropics. Discuss the importance of the social, cultural and economic setting of people and communities in the planning and implementation of health services and disease control. CareersThe programme provides excellent training for doctors intending to work in resource poor tropical countries (clinical services, public health, research and emergency relief programmes). The programme is also highly relevant to practitioners in developed countries, particularly those involved in infectious diseases, communicable disease control, travel health, emergency medicine and general practice. Doctors with a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene typically work with NGOs and IOs directly after the course, providing a valuable year out of core or specialty training. Many medical retirees also join us on the course before starting volunteer work overseas. This diploma is an essential criterion for working with large NGOs, such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). TestimonialsI feel very privileged and fortunate to have been a student at LSTM over the past few months. The course deserves its excellent reputation, and it is clearly in safe hands as it continues to respond to our ever-changing world. I was very impressed from the moment of my arrival by the levels of professionalism and enthusiasm displayed by all members of the School. It was obvious that everybody greatly enjoys teaching on the course, and this led to a highly conducive environment for learning, whilst still having fun! I now feel far more confident in my approach towards tropical medicine, and I have already been able to put my new-found knowledge to good use whilst advising colleagues deployed abroad. My current role involves responding on Humanitarian and Disaster Relief operations, and having attended this course, I feel much better equipped to provide the best possible medical care to my patients in these highly challenging circumstances. (Dr Tom Bennett Britton, May 2019) Great teaching, great environment, opportunity to meet many interesting and inspirational people, both students and staff and a lot of fun. (Anonymous end of course feedback May 2019) It is truly an amazing experience to be here at LSTM on the DTM&H course. Wonderful tutors, friendly staff and great environment; all in one place at the same time. I am so happy to have made the right choice to attend the course at LSTM. Dr Michael Kamara, Sierra Leone on the Spring 2019 DTM&H The teaching and lecturers have been fantastic, amazing depth of knowledge and huge amounts of clinical insight to impart... Fantastic experience and really glad I came (2016) The real privilege of this course are the lecturers we have here at LSTM, who are world leaders in their fields. Many take the time to tell us about the varied and colourful careers they have led, with experiences that have taken them around the world. In this post-MTAS world, it is a refreshing and much-needed reminder that some of our most celebrated academics and clinicians have not had a direct trajectory to the top of their fields. Highlights include learning about Ebola from Dr Tim O’Dempsey, who led the WHO clinical response in Kenema, Sierra Leone; humanitarian agencies from Prof. Joe Valadez, who worked with the Rwandan government immediately post-genocide, and about rabies from Prof. Tom Solomon, who has treated one of the few UK cases in the last century. Inspiration also comes from fellow classmates: one of our cohort was responsible for testing diagnostics in the field during the Ebola crisis and has a unique insight into the challenges faced.
