This week LSTM has played host to about 70 overseas students as part of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s (CSC) lecture series.
The students are studying for a PhD or MSc in Universities as far afield as London and Dundee (and many points in-between), and attended the Lecture event on the theme: “Translating science research into public action”. The event was sponsored by the UK CSC, which funds the studies of all those students attending.
After a short welcome and introduction by LSTM’s Director, Professor Janet Hemingway, and Professor Brian Faragher, who is a Commissioner with the CSC, students enjoyed four talks around the theme from Andrew Weeks, Professor of International Maternal Health at the University of Liverpool, Professor Paul Garner, Co-ordinator of Evidence Synthesis for Global Health at LSTM, Dr Tim Martineau Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management at LSTM and Andrew Lyons, Professor of Marketing and Operations at the University of Liverpool.
The talks were followed by a lively and wide-ranging discussion session, for which the four speakers were joined by Dr. Bob MacClelland, Reader in Educational Technology in The Liverpool Business School at Liverpool John Moores University. Students were then able to chat further and network with each other during a buffet in the LSTM café.
The Event at LSTM was the first of the CSC lecture series of this academic year and aimed to explore the importance of converting science research into practice across society, and how it can best be achieved. Through events such as this, the CSC brings together academic and professional speakers with Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows to explore a range of relevant issues relating to development. Through the events, Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows have the chance to consider and share opinions on key topics, and network with other award holders and guests.
