LSTM’s Clinical Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory has been accredited by Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd. The accreditation involved an external audit of the ability to provide a service of high quality, demonstrating a defined standard of practice, which is confirmed by peer review.

Lab Manager Dr Wendi Bailey said: “The award of CPA accreditation is further proof of the lab meeting the highest standards of diagnostic practices”.

The Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory, part of LSTM’s Department of Clinical Sciences, offers a nationwide referral service for the identification of human parasites from clinical specimens. With services provided to hospitals and health centres across the UK and Ireland, over 4,000 samples are examined by the lab each year. Providing diagnosis for a range of diseases and infections from malaria to pin worms. As one of few facilities in the UK with such experienced staff and state-of-the-art facilities, the lab enhances the teaching portfolio at LSTM, WHICH offers a number of lab-based diagnostic short courses.

CPA adds further to the quality assurance levels upheld by the lab, continuing an environment that upholds professional values and is committed to good professional practice and conduct. Further enhancing the lab’s national standing as a a northern reference centre for malaria diagnosis.
