Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has leapt into second place in the latest Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) sector rankings.

PTES, co-ordinated by AdvanceHE, is the only UK higher education sector-wide survey to gain insight from taught postgraduate students about their learning and teaching experience.

LSTM has risen four places to second out of 107 participating institutions in the sector rankings, and its overall student satisfaction rate has climbed to 94%.

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) 2024 has also generated encouraging results for LSTM, particularly in levels of overall student satisfaction among Postgraduate Research Students. PRES provides robust, benchmark data from institutions across the UK and beyond about postgraduate research provision.

LSTM’s student satisfaction rate rose six percentage points to 81% in the 2024 PRES, and the institution was ranked second for research culture and third for professional development from 53 participating institutions.

Professor Isabel Lucas, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Education at LSTM, said: “I am delighted that LSTM has risen to its highest ever position in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey, and to see promising results in many areas of this year’s Postgraduate Research Experience Survey. To score so highly in overall student satisfaction is testament to the quality of the learning environment cultivated by our talented academic staff, and the student experience fostered at an institution that is changing lives for the better across the globe.

“We continue to invest in our estate and teaching facilities in Liverpool, and through our various scholarship programmes we strive to extend educational opportunities to students from a range of backgrounds.

“As the home to students from more than 90 countries, it is also particularly pleasing to be the top ranked institution in the PTES among international students. The diverse mix of experiences that our student cohort brings is vital to the development of knowledge and sense of community that we all enjoy at LSTM.

“We are committed to continuous improvement, and we will reflect on the valuable feedback to ensure that we continue to provide quality and satisfaction across all aspects of the student experience.”

The positive PTES and PRES results are the latest accolade for LSTM, after rising into the top 5.3% of universities worldwide in the 2024 Center for World University Rankings.
