A third year PhD student from LSTM, Clair Rose has won this year’s Best Student Talk Award from the British Society for Parasitology (BSP).

Her presentation was delivered during the BSPs meeting earlier this month in Cambridge, which is the primary international meeting in the field. It was based on her PhD thesis, which was then published in PLOS NTD last week (Rose Clair et al., ‘an investigation into the protein composition of the teneral Glossina morsitans morsitans peritrophic matrix’) as part of a suite of papers published following 10 years of work by the InternationalGlossina Genome Initiative, sequencing the genome of the tsetse fly.

Clair is a 3rd year PhD student working under Dr Alvaro Acosta-Serrano and supported by a LSTM studentship.Dr Acosta-Serrano was delighted for Clair receiving the award, he said: “This is a prestigious meeting and award and I am pleased that Clair’s dedication and hard work has been recognised. This kind of acknowledgement is really important to researchers at their start of their careers and Claire really deserves the accolade.”

Liverpool will host the BSP 2015 Spring Meeting at the BT Convention Centre on the banks of the River Mersey. The meeting will take place from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th of April, 2015.

The meeting will be themed around Malaria, the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and their Vectors together with a fusion of traditional and contemporary multi-disciplinary approaches to Parasitology research

The location has been chosen due to the Liverpool’s link to LSTM, the world’s oldest School of Tropical Medicine and five Universities, with a long and rich history in Parasitology

Among the organisers for next year’s event are LSTM staff Prof Russell Stothard, Prof Mark Taylor, Dr Joe Turner and Dr Emily Adams.
