Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine has been shortlisted for two prizes at the Times Higher Education Awards 2025, including Specialist Institution of the Year.

LSTM is also in the running for Outstanding Estates Team, in recognition of its work in overseeing the delivery of four major capital projects worth more than £25m in Liverpool and internationally.

Specialist Institution of the Year is a new category at the THE Awards, the annual celebration of excellence in UK and Irish universities that are widely recognised as the Oscars of higher education.

LSTM has been shortlisted for its achievements in the 2023-24 academic year, which marked its 125th anniversary year and tenth as an independent HEI.

Winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony in Edinburgh on November 13.

Specialist Institution of the Year

This new award recognises a specialist institution that offers a majority of its courses in one broad subject area.

LSTM has been shortlisted for a year that saw its research portfolio grow to close to £750m, the establishment of a new international collaboration to prevent death and disability from tropical snakebite, the development of foundational principles in research collaborations to tackle global health inequities and a multimillion-pound campus redevelopment to enhance the global education offer.

Outstanding Estates Team

LSTM’s Estates team has overseen the delivery of four major capital projects worth more than £25m, including: the restoration of the historic Mary Kingsley Building; the creation of the specialist Human Challenge Facility; the completion of an innovative new teaching space at Pembroke House; and the construction of the state-of-the-art medical training and research CREATOR facility in Malawi.

This dedicated team worked between Liverpool and Africa, where they also supported pioneering work to appoint women to key construction roles in the CREATOR building project at MLW.

THE Awards

These are the 21st annual THE Awards, with over 500 entries in 21 categories. Last year, LSTM won International Collaboration of the Year for the REDRESS research project, and in 2023 was shortlisted for University of the Year.

Chris Havergal, THE Editor, said: “At a time of unprecedented challenge for higher education, the THE Awards enter their third decade as a steady and staunch reminder of the exceptional work that continues to take place across the UK and Ireland every day, on campuses and beyond.

“The fact that we received well over 500 entries for this year’s awards is a sure sign that the sector’s commitment to transforming lives for the better is undimmed. We offer our sincere congratulations to all those institutions and individuals shortlisted – it really is an achievement to have reached this stage in a very competitive year.”
