LSTM has achieved a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, a recognition of the rigorous foundational work being done to improve race equity across the school.

The Race Equality Charter is a sector-led initiative to improve the representation, experience, progression and success of racially minoritised staff and students within higher education.

Administered by Advance HE, the Charter provides a framework through which institutions work to critically reflect and act on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of the progression and success of racially minoritised staff and students.

Achieving the Bronze Award recognises the efforts and dedication of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s staff, particularly the Race Equity Self-Assessment Team and the Race Equity Action Committee who have supported this work.

Professor David Lalloo, Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, said: “I'm proud and delighted that LSTM has achieved the Bronze Race Equality Charter Award from Advance HE. This is the culmination of a great deal of work from people across the organisation, and I'd like to thank them all for this.

“The Charter demonstrates our steadfast commitment to this important agenda and sets out a five-year action plan that will enable LSTM to become a more anti-racist organisation where everyone is included and valued.”

The Race Equality Charter was launched in 2015 by Advance HE, a member-led UK higher education charity. LSTM joins as one of only a handful of small and specialised institutions, alongside dozens of other higher education institutions that voluntarily participate in the Charter. It covers all aspects of an institution’s activity and communities, including the representation and experiences of academic and research staff; professional, technical and operational staff; and students at all levels.

A key part of the Charter involves institutions undertaking a critical assessment of their individual context, identifying priority issues, and designing and implementing actions to advance race equality autonomously and flexibly.

Anne Mwangi, Head of the Race Equality Charter, said: “REC Bronze is recognition of an institution’s robust foundation for eliminating racial inequalities, developing inclusive cultures and moving from commitment to sustainable and integrated bold and ambitious action.

“Advance HE looks forward to supporting Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as it progresses its action plans to advance race equality.”
