And HIV and STIs are part of the lives of many young women.In this course, you will systematically analyse the factors influencing choice and opportunity in sexual and reproductive health. This course was known previously as as ‘Sexual Health and Human Sexuality’. The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all our students, and students who do not wish to be entered for academic credits will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Course Outline This course aims to provide you with a knowledgeable and critical understanding of the concepts of sexual health and human sexuality. You will learn about: human sexuality, sexual health and sexual dysfunction, and sexuality and relationships education; epidemiology and prevention and control of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV infection; the syndromic approach to diagnosis and management of STIs; counselling and testing for HIV and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission; organisation, planning and monitoring and evaluation of family planning programmes; unwanted pregnancy and (unsafe) abortion; sexual and gender-based violence; epidemiology and prevention of cervical cancer; and infertility. The course is taught through a combination of lectures and student-led seminars. A student-centred approach is taken, using discussion and group work supported by independent study and directed reading. Entrance RequirementsAcademic requirements: Anyone who works in the fields of sexual & reproductive health would find this course beneficial, also people working in areas of international public health. English language requirements: Attending course with Academic Credit: The course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years. Attending course – Certificate of Attendance Only: The course is taught in English and in a postgraduate setting. Students whose first language is not English should be aware that to benefit from the course participants should have English language proficiency at the equivalent of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5. Explain the benefits of FP and its role in SRH programmes Discuss the effectiveness and limitations of different prevention and control strategies for STIs, including HIV, in resource-poor countries Demonstrate a detailed and systematic knowledge and understanding of the concepts of human sexuality, sexual health, sexual dysfunction and approaches to sexuality and relationships education CareersUnderstanding the biopsychosocial aspects of barriers and facilitators to uptake of sexual and reproductive health services will better equip you to contextualise the integration of clinical and public health agenda in this area.
