Strengthening Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) in Kwara state

Johnson & Johnson 2015 - 2018

With support from Johnson & Johnson LSTM working in Kwara State in Nigeria in 2015 with partnership with the wellbeing Foundation Africa. Since then, LSTM has supported capacity strengthening in Emergencies Obstetric and Newborn Crare (EmONC) and quality improvement in 21 HCFs in 7 of the 16 LGAs of Kwara state. Trainees from 10 hospitals and 11 Primary health care centres, from the Kwara State Primary Health Development Agency (KSPHCDA), the University of Ilorin Teaching (UITH) and the School Midwifery Ilorin all participated in these training and development sessions.

Capacity development outputs include the following:

  • 290 HCP trained in EmONC and using their acquired skills on a regular basis.
  • 88 health care providers trained in quality improvement
  • 50 master trainers and skills lab coordinators trained and facilitating training and skills on a regular
  • 8 skills labs set up and used on a regular basis by health care providers
  • 21 facilities (100%) improved the availability of Emergencies Obstetric Care services.

The long-term outcomes have remained the same since then:

  • Increased availability and improved quality of care.
  • Decreased maternal and newborn mortality.
