Programme Overview The Diploma in Tropical Nursing (DTN) is awarded by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) as part of its suite of non credit-bearing Professional Diploma programmes aimed at enhancing the knowledge, skills and competencies of health care professionals working in low and middle-income resource settings. The DTN aims to familiarise participants with common health issues in overseas settings, helping them develop their analytical, problem solving and practical nursing skills. The curriculum is flexible to include sessions relevant to current international events and also contains a strong laboratory element. The programme provides up-to-date factual knowledge and current best practice, as well as opportunities to develop practical hands-on skills. The curriculum has been informed by the requirements of organisations deploying nurses in low and middle income countries (e.g. Medicins Sans Frontieres; Voluntary Service Overseas) and is designed to introduce common health topics that nurses and midwives are likely to come across whilst working in these settings. The DTN begins with a period of self-study and formative evaluation (estimated 20 learning hours) before commencing an intensive, 3 week taught element. It concludes with a 3 week assessment period supported by online tutoring. This format of concentrated contact time combined with flexible self-study makes the programme accessible to participants concurrently engaged in professional practice. EXTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES The Royal College of Nursing has various funding opportunities for professional development up to £1600. All UK registered nurses and midwives are normally eligible to apply. A message from our Director of Studies - Terry Kana The Diploma in Tropical Nursing at LSTM is going through exciting times as we respond to the challenges and demands that nurses working in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are confronting right now. Our course is designed to prepare nurses to work intelligently and confidently in demanding settings. By participating in a pre-course module, they ‘hit the ground running’ from their first day at LSTM. Hot topics delivered by world leading experts range from the serious impact of climate change on global health, implementing LSTM clinical research on malaria to the impact of sexual abuse and gender inequality. Applying the recent Médecins Sans Frontières ‘Nursing Care Framework’ (2019) we ensure that we address the unique contribution of nurses. The DTN curriculum is continuously responding to developing the nurses and midwives role in the evolving global health arena. Topical sessions are now included on the impact of climate change on health, refugee mental health and managing outbreaks such as coronavirus and ebola. New for this year is a challenging session which will simulate real-life experience of working as a nurse in a conflict setting. The many demands of informed yet quick decision making, being in a resource poor environment. Here’s what a couple of students have said: I made friends from all over the world and gained a different perspective of approaching healthcare. Doing the DTN gave me the courage for a different approach to my career. I was blown away by the quality of teaching and the passion and enthusiasm of both the lecturers and my fellow students. It turns out the DTN changed my life forever! TestimonialsI completed the DTN in November 2017. After the completion of the DTN I joined the humanitarian emergency response roster for an international NGO and spent 3 months working in the Rohingya refugee camps in southern Bangladesh. The content of the DTN was directly relevant to my work in Bangladesh (for instance preparing for a potential cholera outbreak in the camps) and I often referenced much of the materials while overseas. It gave me confidence working in a humanitarian emergency response having tools, resources, and background context which I gained from the DTN. The quality and relevance of the modules as well as the passionate faculty of the DTN motivated me to return the following year for my MSc of International Public Health and dig deeper into some of the topics we explored. I would absolutely recommend the DTN for any nurse that is interested in global health and working in low income settings; it is the best decision I've made towards my career goals. - Julia Petras (US nurse) The course was exactly the boost and inspiration I have been looking for (even without realising it) in my nursing. To be surrounded by like minded go-getters was brilliant. (Jess Ainsley, UK Nurse, DTN December 2017) DTN will always be one of the best courses I have ever been on! Our working group has stayed connected-which is awesome. (Nancy Campbell, Canadian nurse, May 2017 - Currently working in Mbale in Uganda) During the diploma I was blown away by the quality of teaching and the passion and enthusiasm of both the lecturers and my fellow students. It was an intense course, but I enjoyed it so much I'm back for more - I've just started a MSc International Public Health at LSTM. It turns out the DTN changed my life forever! (Rose Danaher, UK nurse, May 2016) I attended the Diploma in Tropical Nursing at LSTM as a Registered Nurse Midwife with about 3.5 years experience in a metropolitan hospital in Australia only. I had come halfway around the world (literally) because it seemed like a good course and because I knew I wanted something different from my career than the typical advancement structure my colleagues were following. I arrived in a fairly chilly Liverpool to find a school and people that changed my world. I vividly remember the moment I realised that I was in a room filled with people who had similar ideas about healthcare and their intended futures as I did; I was no longer the unusual one! The three weeks of the DTN were some of the most intense of my life. It was a busy and demanding course, and I certainly can't now remember everything we learnt. However each day was filled with interesting and relevant information by engaging speakers. Many of whom are world leaders in their fields! I made friends from all over the world and gained a different perspective of approaching healthcare in general, as well as many thousands of words of notes (yes literally!) on many of the big topics in developing country/tropical healthcare! Doing the DTN gave me the courage for a different approach to my career. I have done short term contracts in the Northern Territory of Australia gaining experience amongst the Indigenous people, briefly been a midwife for rural women in Papua New Guinea, and done a short trip to Uganda observing many areas of healthcare in the year and a bit since. Having the DTN on my resume helped open these doors for me. I enjoyed the parasites I discovered during the DTN so much that I considered changing careers entirely to become a parasitologist! However, my time volunteering in Papua New Guinea made me appreciate the skills I already have and I am now focusing on maternal and newborn health instead. I also obviously enjoyed studying at LSTM, because I am back again doing the MSc in International Public Health (Sexual and Reproductive Health)! - (Joanne Gerrell, Australian Nurse Midwife, May 2017) I appreciated how collaborative the staff were with our class reps, we genuinely felt like we had input. (DTN Student, Dec 2015) I enjoyed hearing from so many experts. Lots of first hand experience which was awesome to hear. (DTN Student, Dec 2015) Fantastic wealth of knowledge displayed by all the lecturers and clinicians, without exception. (DTN student, Dec 2015) Having the tech support was amazing - the whole tech side of it was brilliant, the clickers, the binder app, having wifi in the room, having plug sockets at each desk - all enhanced the learning. (DTN Student, Dec 2015) Thank you for a wonderful 3 weeks and for reminding me of all the reasons I came into nursing Make an enquirya032000000DNec8 Submit your enquiries here Programme Version Name First Name * Last Name * Email * Phone Country * --Select-- Afghanistan Albania Algeria American Samoa Andorra Angola Anguilla Antarctica Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Armenia Aruba Australia Austria Azerbaijan Bahamas Bahrain Bangladesh Barbados Belarus Belgium Belize Benin Bermuda Bhutan Bolivia Bosnia and Herzegovina Botswana Bouvet Island Brazil British Indian Ocean Territory Brunei Darussalam Bulgaria Burkina Faso Burundi Cambodia Cameroon Canada Cape Verde Caribbean Netherlands Cayman Islands Central African Republic Chad Chile China Christmas Island Cocos (Keeling) Islands Colombia Comoros Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo Cook Islands Costa Rica Cote d'Ivoire Croatia Cuba Curacao Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Djibouti Dominica Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Equatorial Guinea Eritrea Estonia Ethiopia Falkland Islands Falkland Islands Faroe Islands Fiji Finland France French Guiana French Polynesia French Southern Territories Gabon Gambia Georgia Germany Ghana Gibraltar Greece Greenland Grenada Guadeloupe Guam Guatemala Guernsey Guinea-Bissau Guinea Guyana Haiti Heard and McDonald Islands Honduras Hong Kong Hungary Iceland India Indonesia Iran Iraq Ireland Isle of Man Israel Italy Jamaica Japan Jersey Jordan Kazakhstan Kenya Kiribati Kuwait Kyrgyzstan Lao People's Democratic Republic Latvia Lebanon Lesotho Liberia Libya Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Macau Macedonia Madagascar Malawi Malaysia Maldives Mali Malta Marshall Islands Martinique Mauritania Mauritius Mayotte Mexico Micronesia, Federated States of Moldova Monaco Mongolia Montenegro Montserrat Morocco Mozambique Myanmar Namibia Nauru Nepal New Caledonia New Zealand Nicaragua Niger Nigeria Niue Norfolk Island North Korea Northern Mariana Islands Norway Oman Pakistan Palau Palestinian Territory, Occupied Panama Papua New Guinea Paraguay Peru Philippines Pitcairn Poland Portugal Puerto Rico Qatar Reunion Romania Russian Federation Rwanda Saint Barthelemy Saint Helena Saint Kitts and Nevis Saint Lucia Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Saint-Martin (France) Saint-Martin (Pays-Bas) Samoa San Marino Sao Tome and Principe Saudi Arabia Senegal Serbia Seychelles Sierra Leone Singapore Slovakia (Slovak Republic) Slovenia Solomon Islands Somalia South Africa South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands South Korea South Sudan Spain Sri Lanka St. Pierre and Miquelon Sudan Suriname Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands Swaziland Sweden Switzerland Syria Taiwan Tajikistan Tanzania Thailand The Netherlands Timor-Leste Togo Tokelau Tonga Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey Turkmenistan Turks and Caicos Islands Tuvalu Uganda Ukraine United Arab Emirates United Kingdom United States Minor Outlying Islands United States Uruguay Uzbekistan Vanuatu Vatican Venezuela Vietnam Virgin Islands (British) Virgin Islands (U.S.) Wallis and Futuna Islands Western Sahara Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe Nature of Enquiry * --Select-- Course Availability Course Information Fees & Payment Scholarships Disability Accommodation Visa & Immigration Other Subject Description How did you hear about LSTM? --Select-- LSTM Website Word of Mouth Alumni Recommendation Course Search Website Search Engine Advert Professional Journal Careers Fair/Exhibition IEC Abroad Other Keep me informed about this course Keep me informed about LSTM news Apply Start date End date Home fee Overseas fee 2 June 2025 20 June 2025 £1,950 £1,950 Apply Start date: 2 June 2025 End date: 20 June 2025 Home fee: £1,950 Overseas fee: £1,950 Apply 86441 reads
