IMPORTANT INFORMATION. Please note that this course is fully asynchronous and applications are always open. However, applications will be processed on a monthly basis. Prospective participants who complete their application by the 25th day in each month will have access to course content on the first day of the following month and will have to complete their study by the end of that month. Course completion will require approximately 4 hours.

To receive a Certificate of Completion, participants are required to complete and upload a practical exercise to reinforce learning and build a functional Power BI dashboard. If unsuccessful, feedback and support will be provided and participants can re-submit their work.

Course Overview

This short course is an introduction to creating Power BI dashboards. It covers fundamental concepts and guides you through the journey from raw data to a finished presentation. This course serves as a beginner's building block for future development.

Teaching approaches

Guided Modules with Steps: Detailed, step-by-step instructions provided through our Virtual Learning Environment..
Interactive Hands-On Sessions: Experiential learning activities to apply concepts in real-time.
Post-Session Self-Study and Practice: Opportunities for self-study and practice to reinforce learning.
File Review Method: Participants will create a functional Power BI dashboard to be reviewed against a ‘Gold Standard’ completed version. A method will be provided for users to return their files for review.

Entrance Requirements

Academic requirements:

None.

A basic understanding of data sets, including Data Tables, Data Types, and Charts. Experience creating charts in Excel or similar software.

English language requirements:

The course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of their language skills. A full list is available at English language requirements and English language waiver programme.

Technical requirements: Access to a Windows 10/11 computer with Administrator privileges and authority/permission to install software applications. Internet access (suitable for downloading software).

Provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to:

• Understand the fundamental concepts of Power BI and data visualization.

• Identify and source relevant data for your presentations.

• Clean, prepare and transform data in Power BI.

• Apply basic DAX functions for data analysis and manipulation.

• Create interactive elements such as hierarchy and relationships in your dashboards.

• Design effective and visually appealing Power BI dashboards including mobile presentation.

• Publish and share your dashboards using Power BI

• Complete a practical exercise to reinforce your learning and build your own dashboard.
