This course aims to equip you with a knowledgeable and critical understanding of the concept of quality of care in maternal and newborn health (MNH) and practical skills for improving quality and managing change in their own workplace. This course is designed for aspiring professionals working or interested in a range of environments that deliver MNH health care ,with a focus on operating in today’s world of economic challenges whilst continually striving to enhance the quality of these services. You will learn about the importance of improving the quality of MNH care and services, and will explore how to assess quality from the perspective of a health system, a health care worker, and a recipient of care. You will also reflect critically on your own area of practice and role in quality improvement, and appreciate how research and audit differ and how they are related. The course is taught by a combination of lectures delivered by external and internal experts and student-led seminars. A student-centred approach is taken, using discussion and group work supported by independent study and directed reading. Entrance RequirementsAcademic requirements: Anyone who works in the fields of international child health with a quality improvement capacity would find this course useful, especially doctors, nurses, midwives, community health practitioners and public health researchers. English language requirements: Attending course with Academic Credit: The course is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all learning components, or a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 for the Internet-based Test (iBT), with minimum scores of 21 for Listening and Writing, 22 for Reading and 23 for Speaking. Tests should be within their validity period of 2 years. Attending course – Certificate of Attendance Only: The course is taught in English and in a postgraduate setting. Students whose first language is not English should be aware that to benefit from the course participants should have English language proficiency at the equivalent of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5. Demonstrate the ability to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate interventions to improve quality of care within their own area of practice and setting. CareersTo fully benefit from the advantages of quality improvement in MNH, there is an urgent need to build capacity of health-care providers to be able to conduct maternal and perinatal death audits, as well as standards- or criterion-based audit.
