LSTM’s Director, Professor Janet Hemingway will be chairing a session today at the Biennial Meeting of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Oxford. This year’s theme is Measuring Progress and the meeting began this morning.

Over the three days those taking part will look at how progress is measured to ensure that all activities are achieving their maximum impact. Those attending, speaking and chairing include representatives of the development aid community, the charitable sector, international funding agencies as well as academia.

Professor Hemingway is chairing a session entitled Resistance: measuring resistance to insecticides and drugs, and its threat to progress. There are a number of people taking part in the session looking at insecticide and drug resistance and its impact on the treatment and control of malaria. LSTM’s Dr David Weetman is among those taking part and will be focussing on molecular diagnostics for mosquito insecticide resistance.

Head of LSTM’s Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health (CMNH), Professor Nynke van den Broek, is co-chairing a session along with Chris Whitty from the Department for International Development (DFID), entitled Development aid: measuring progress achieved with international financing. One of those taking part in the session co-chaired by Professor van den Broek is CMNH’s Dr Barbara Madaj, who will look at measuring maternal and newborn health in healthcare facilities.
