Ewan has worked at LSTM as a global health researcher since 2016, specialising in health economics and health systems. Based in the Health Systems and Workforce Strengthening Unit, his work focuses on public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in fragile and climate-affected settings. His current research centres on building climate-resilient health systems, with an emphasis on human resources for health and service delivery in low-resource contexts.
Ewan graduated in mathematics (BSc) from the University of Aberdeen before completing an MSc in health economics at the University of York. His PhD research, completed at LSTM, developed methodologies to better capture patient experiences in health economic models of tuberculosis (TB) care. This work incorporated TB-related disability, post-treatment sequelae, and patient-incurred costs into evaluations of diagnostic and treatment pathways.
Research
Ewan’s current research centres on building climate-resilient health systems, with a focus on human resources for health and service delivery in low-resource settings.
He applies health economics and systems thinking to explore how health is valued and measured, and how services can be made more efficient, effective, and equitable, particularly in low- and middle-income settings across Africa and Asia. This work draws on a range of methods including cost-effectiveness analysis, qualitative research, and Virtual Health System Modelling to inform both strategic planning and day-to-day decision-making.
Ewan has a particular interest in how climate change is reshaping health system priorities, capacity, and equity. His broader research interests include the economics of service delivery, patient-incurred costs and their impact on access to care, and the integration of systems thinking into public health evaluation and planning.
Teaching
Ewan lectures on the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Health (DTM&H) and the MSc in International Public Health. He has an ongoing commitment to capacity strengthening running international modelling and health economics workshops for researchers, PhD students, and TB programme staff, particularly in LMICs.
Ewan sits on LSTM’s Sustainability and Environment Committee.
