You will find details of our tuition fees and additional costs to students below.

Funding postgraduate study can be challenging so please take the time to review all the options available to you which will differ depending on whether you are a UK or international student.

You may be eligible for one of our scholarship awards which offer students who meet the eligibility criteria discounted course fees, or you may qualify for one of our tuition fee discounts.

Students from the UK may be able to apply for a postgraduate Master’s loan.

There are also many sources of external funding available but please be aware that the deadlines for these can vary, so apply early.

Additional costs to students

MSc Tropical Disease Biology

The tuition fee covers the cost of the induction field course, but students may wish to bring a small amount of spending money for social events. The tuition fee also covers the cost of a laboratory-based or desk-based project in LSTM. Some projects also involve a short period of data collection overseas (normally 2–4 weeks). Overseas or field projects will incur costs such as transport, accommodation, hiring translators, travel in-country, visas, vaccinations and possibly fees for ethics applications. Costs, depending on duration, nature of fieldwork and complexity of the project, can range from £1,500–£5,000. Students are not required to pay these additional costs at registration but must have the necessary funds available in March–May when booking travel and accommodation. LSTM will provide comprehensive insurance for off-site work and cover the cost of this. There may also be course-relevant and social trips, which are optional and may have associated costs.

Master of Research (MRes)

The tuition fee covers the cost of a desk-based, laboratory-based or field-based research project. A limited number of projects include overseas data collection; in this case flights, local travel, field staff and equipment/consumable costs will be covered up to a maximum of £4,000. Additional costs for antibody testing and vaccinations may apply for laboratory projects. Students are not required to pay this additional fee at registration but must have funds available when they start the programme. Overseas projects will incur further costs (see above). Optional course-related or social trips may also have costs.

All other Master’s level programmes (MSc, MPH)

The tuition fee covers a desk-based project based in LSTM. Depending on your experience, a lab-based project may be possible but will incur an additional bench fee of approximately £1,500. Vaccinations or antibody testing may also be required. LSTM can help students arrange an optional overseas project (typically four weeks). These will incur costs such as flights, accommodation, translators, visas, vaccinations, and possible ethics application fees; typical costs range from £3,000–£5,000. LSTM provides insurance for off-site work.

While LSTM provides access to most scientific software packages, some specialist software may require a subscription fee. Optional course-related or social trips may also have costs.
